09 April 2025  DENZA, the premium technology-oriented automotive brand of the BYD Group, is leading its push into the European market with the stunning Z9GT, a vehicle that successfully blends elegant design with cutting-edge technologies. And at the heart of the car’s standout features is the e3 Platform, developed exclusively for the DENZA brand by the largest research and development resources in the global automobile industry.

Background of the Intelligent e3 Platform
In an era of rapid progress in science and technology, and gains made in areas like motor efficiency and battery technology, users’ demands from vehicles have become more diversified – especially in the driving experience, where requirements are higher than ever.

Based on its deep insight into these user needs and a desire for constant innovation, DENZA’s parent group BYD put forward in 2024 a new strategy for the next phase of new-energy vehicles: Vehicle Intelligence.

Vehicle Intelligence breaks the barriers between electrified and mechanical systems through an intelligent architecture that achieves multi-system linkage. Through it, vehicle perception becomes more comprehensive, coordination and control are more scientific, and execution is more accurate.

The result of BYD’s engineering prowess is the world’s first vehicle intelligence control technology platform – e3 Platform, which has the power to comprehensively deliver users’ needs for a new level of premium mobility. As the new exclusive technology of the DENZA brand, the e3 vehicle intelligent control technology platform reshapes the new-energy benchmark, bringing the user an intelligent, safe, agile and high-performance premium travel experience.

Core definition of the e3 Platform
The e3 vehicle intelligent control technology platform takes its name from the three major architectures that it incorporates. They can be summarised as follows:

Power Architecture
The e3 Platform deeply integrates the advantages of both Super DM plug-in hybrid technology and the pure-electric e-Platform 3.0 Evo, harnessing the potential of BYD’s vertically integrated industrial chain. The plug-in Super DM system, the first able to be integrated with Cell-to-Body construction, can deliver impressive combined range, while in both Super DM and pure-electric form, the e3 Platform can achieve extremely high power outputs.

Control Architecture
By using integrated, overall control of the three-motor independent drive configuration, e3 Platform can accurately adjust the torque distribution of each motor in real time, based on the power demands of the vehicle as well as the specific levels of grip available. The system can also match the functions of the rear dual-motor torque vectoring and the rear-wheel dual-motor independent steering to give the vehicle much higher levels of control in tight situations.

Vehicle Intelligence Architecture
The e3 Platform is founded on the principle of a single architecture that blends the brain and the neural network of the vehicle. Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) acts as a vehicle control hub, taking command of all of the controllable actuators of the vehicle – braking, suspension and steering – while exploiting industry-leading data-signal transmission times of just 10ms. This level of integration means that the system can not only perceive changes in the internal and external environment of the car in real time; it can also consolidate that information in milliseconds, feed it back to the central ‘brain’ for rapid decision making, and then adjust the state of the vehicle to enhance driving pleasure, safety and comfort.

Core advantages of the e3 Platform
When applied together, these three architectures deliver the following core functions that help to make the e3 Platform a unique offering:

Ultra-capable steering
The e3 Platform can turn its rear wheels so they point towards or away from the centre of the vehicle, and the vehicle can then use this technique to dramatically shorten the turning radius/circle for tight manoeuvres or U-turns. Through the combination of four-wheel steering and torque distribution control, e3 can achieve a turning radius of just 4.62m for a E-segment vehicle like the DENZA Z9GT. This is the smallest such figure for a car of this size in the world, and in line with those of many small city cars.

High-speed tyre blowout control
The e3 Platform’s industry-leading levels of integration mean that it can react to situations such as high-speed tyre blowouts, even at speeds as high as 180 km/h. When a vehicle experiences a blowout at high speeds, the VMC (Vehicle Motion Control) system detects the problem in milliseconds, then controls both rear wheels to maintain a neutral steering angle and quickly adjusts the torque distribution of the three motors. This reduces the load on the blown tyre and dynamically allocates drive and braking forces to the remaining wheels, improving vehicle stability and resulting in a 47% reduction in peak yaw rate. Assistance systems from the e3 Platform’s intelligent driving technology can also intervene to identify the lane the vehicle is travelling in and further reduce vehicle yawing.

Compass U-Turn
When conditions are even tighter, the e3 Platform can combine braking, torque vectoring and rear-wheel steering to offer pivot turning, anywhere from 0° to 360°, around either of the front wheels.

e3 parking
In a world-first function, e3 Platform offers intelligent parking ability through high-precision control, torque control and the ultra-capable steering. With a single, simple command, the vehicle will automatically position its nose into a suitable space and then 'swing’its rear wheels and body into the gap to the car behind.

Low-grip road stabilisation system
When the level of adhesion on the road surface becomes variable and low, due to snow, ice or water, a normal car is prone to skidding and becoming unstable. The e3 Platform can use the independent rear steering and differential control of the dual rear motors to minimise lateral interference.

Smart crab walk
Turning the front and rear wheels in the same direction allows e3 Platform vehicles to move diagonally in a ‘smart crab walk’ – increasing the usability and manoeuvrability of the car in tight spaces or narrow streets with obstructions. The e3 Platform’s system breaks through the limitation of the maximum steering angle of the rear wheels when crab walking, using real dual-motor differential control to take it beyond 10° and achieve a maximum crab-walking angle of 15°.

Stabilisation under braking
When heavy braking is required, or to aid braking in higher-speed situations, the e3 Platform can turn the rear wheels so they point towards the centre of the vehicle. This improves braking stability.

Radar active avoidance
The e3 Platform’s fast responses mean the vehicle can use radar signal inputs to sense the distance to surrounding obstacles, and initiate active control through the rear-wheel steering to reduce the risk of collisions.

High performance
The e3 Platform’s ability to harness the potential of both Super DM hybrid technology and the pure-electric e-Platform 3.0 Evo means that regardless of powertrain, it can deliver astonishing levels of power and performance. The three-motor set-up can deliver 0-100km/h acceleration in less than four seconds.

Blade Battery enhanced by Cell-to-Body construction
The e3 Platform features BYD’s trademark Blade Battery, which makes use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry that features no nickel or cobalt, and offers greater durability and safety than other batteries.

With e3 Platform, the Blade Battery is installed using Cell-to-Body construction, another breakthrough in battery development. The battery is fully integrated into the car’s body and structure, so the top of the battery is actually the floor of the passenger compartment. This helps to make the vehicle incredibly rigid, reducing front-impact intrusion by 15% and side-pillar impact intrusion by 35%.

The battery design itself – a honeycomb-like structure – also contributes to an overall gain in torsional stiffness of 32%, and the layout is more compact too, freeing up an additional 15mm of vertical space in the cabin, as well as delivering a completely flat floor that enhances the passenger experience.
